Cuba: Third
Tourist Destination in the Caribbean
HAVANA, Cuba, May 7 (acn) Cuba is the third most important
tourist destination in the Caribbean, said the Cuban Minister of
Tourism, Manuel Marrero, during a working session of the 31st
International Tourism Fair FITCuba 2011 that concluded on
Saturday at Havana’s Morro-Cabaña Fortress Complex.

Marrero commented that 2,792
new rooms came into exploitation in 2010, mainly in the
northern keys of Villa Clara and in the resort of Varadero.
“In less than 10 years, Cuba has become the third tourist
destination in the insular Caribbean area in spite of the
fact that it does not have access to 50% of the market, that
is, the United States, because of the blockade imposed by
that country on the island,” he noted.
“Since 1990, Cuba has received 30 million visitors despite
the obstacles deriving from Washington’s hostile policy,” he
pointed out.
Marrero announced that FITCuba 2012 will take place on May
8-11 in Cayo Santa Maria, a tourist resort in the central
Cuban province of Villa Clara. The event, dedicated to the
keys of Villa Clara and to family tourism, will have
Argentina as the Guest country, he added.
The main goal of the meeting will be to continue promoting
Cuba as a tourist destination increasing competitiveness and
quality, and also promoting Cuban culture, history and
traditions.
