Maria Do Socorro Gomes,
President of the World Peace Council, highlighted Cuba’s
example during the opening of the event held in the city of
Caimanera in Guantanamo province.
The illegally occupied US Naval Base is found close to
Caimanera, fishing town and agricultural workers that
permanently live in a state of alert due to the closeness of
the enclave, from where multiple aggressions have been
organized on Cuban soil.
However, as emphasized by Do Socorro, despite this permanent
threat that hurts the Cuban people’s sovereignty, Cuba
constitutes a source of humanism and courage that inspires
respect and admiration by the peoples of the world.
We must add to this cruel reality that the US uses Cuban
soil to maintain a torture prison under the pretext that
Washington is fighting terrorism. The term prison is a bit
euphemistic for that concentration camp that, due to its
refined torture methods, Adolf Hilter himself would envy.
In his interventions, the participants of the 2nd Peace
Seminar and the Elimination of Foreign Military Bases agreed
on that the crime committed in the US Naval Base should come
to an end.
US President Barack Obama who promised during his electoral
campaign to shut down the torture center George W. Bush
created the installation, does not care about the
international public opinion. Even countries that are allies
of the US have condemned the concentration camp in
Guantanamo.
The participants from over 30 countries, including some of
them from Turkey, Puerto Rico and Colombia at the Caimanera
event will have the opportunity to express on Thursday their
rejection to the US Naval enclave located on Cuban soil and
in other parts of the world.
They will then alongside the people from the heroic town, as
called by Fidel Castro on July 16th, 1985 issue a final
declaration condemning US military bases and for the release
of the Cuban Five unjustly incarcerated in US prisons for
protecting the Cuban people from terrorist activities
organized by self confessed terrorists like Luis Posada
Carriles.
