Recent surveys in the US now
reflect how President Barack Obama has increased his
popularity rate. The military strategy contributed in
breaking the Republican offensive against the head of state.
Obama began his re- election crusade some months ago in an
attempt to divert public opinion on the economic crisis
which he inherited from the previous administration.
The US President´s crusade includes threats and provocations
against Iran and the People´s Democratic Republic of Korea;
and more recently, his support of the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO) in its aggression against Libya and now
the death of the Al Qaeda leader.
The mysterious operation which no one knew about (not even
the high ranking Pakistani government); then the “dropping”
of Bin Laden’s body into the Arabian Sea against the customs
of the Muslim religion…If the existence of the terrorist was
a mystery, more so his sudden death.
No one saw, heard or felt anything. There are no witnesses,
but scarce and only official information offered by
President Barack Obama. There has also been silence on
behalf of the US National Security office or Intelligence
officials.
What is behind this episode? Should we believe the US
President’s words? I believe, as commented by some media
outlets on the operation that “there was more propaganda
than reasons of national security or fighting terrorism”.
On the issue: terrorism from where, foreign or domestic? The
message of the President of the House Foreign Relations
Committee, Ileana Ross-Lehtinen is an example of her
demagogic essence: “(…) the death of Osama Bin Laden at the
hands of a US commando sends a clear message to our enemies
that we will not rest in our defense of freedom”.
That is to say that if the US maintains troops in Iraq they
are doing so in the name of freedom. That’s the same story
that in Afghanistan and other regions of our planet, like
the case of Libya, where apparently the bombings against the
civilian population are not an act of terrorism.
Same goes with the pardoning of the late terrorist Orlando
Bosch and now Luis Posada Carriles, characterized in their
moment by the FBI as a danger for national security…at the
end both were protected by the US and, are they terrorists?,
not at all, according to Washington.
The attitude taken in the case of Bin Laden brings about the
story by writer Mario Puzo who in his novel The Godfather
told about the origins and events of the Italian mafia. Does
this action differ from the one carried out by the CIA and
the Pentagon against alleged terrorists that no one has seen
except in propaganda photos?
Osama Bin Laden as he had been characterized “is a creature
that surpasses his creator …Al Qaeda is “much more than a
terrorist group: it is philosophy, way of living, exemption,
and monster of a thousand heads”.
Barack Obama in his effort to reach the Oval Office for a
second term, begins making promises…and offers much needed
peace. But one thing is to say and the other is to carry out
his promises, he has a long way to go: economic crisis,
whose solution seems to be extending in time and the wars
that never seem to end.
Will he be the first African American President to play the
cards of war and media campaigns based on the demagogic
rhetoric in search for another four years in office?
