Stones Along the Path to Victory
By Néstor Núñez
The Project of a Latin American and Caribbean Community States
as a free regional entity without the presence of the United
States and Canada is consolidating its presence and influence in
the area of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our
America, ALBA.

They are entities that have ideas and projects of the revolutionary and
progressive leaders that dreamt throughout history about the
Grand Homeland, without any ties to imperialist interests
and free of domination of the powerful North.
In fact we must recall that these principles were the ones that finally
put an end to the so called Free Trade Agreement for the
Americas that Washington attempted to impose on the region
as one of its most compromising ties towards neoliberal
programs.
However, after US attempts in Argentina which came to a halt barely 6
years ago, it is evident that the empire has not abandoned
its plans of transforming its closest regional neighbors in
order to extract its natural resources so much needed for
its economy.
Washington has made an effort in signing bilateral free trade agreements
and has achieved it with Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru
among other nations whose authorities have been inclined to
take the chance with the powerful North.
Many experts say that amidst a continent marked with profound political,
economic and social changes aimed at achieving true
independence and development without foreign intervention
imperialism continues to interfere in their internal issues.
But the project marked with imperialist tricks has gone beyond due to the
absence of a FTAA in the hemisphere indicating that the
masters of such a model are attempting to establish
themselves as a counterpart clan to the already existing
regional independent projects.
The presidents of the nations endorsed late last month this line of
conduct to negotiate the constitution for an alleged
Alliance for the Pacific that many analysts and politicians
characterize as an attempt to “break Latin American unity
and favor US hegemony”.
For economist Carlos Bedoya: “the pact is a resurrection of the failed
Free Trade Agreement”, rejected by the majority of the
regional nations for its ties to Washington.
Those that want to destroy the region are once again recharging backed by
the powerful North that has dreamt for over half a century
with stopping the transformations that opened the doors to
the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Thanks to the
resistance of the Cuban people and the growing struggles of
the nations in the region there is strength capable of
setting guidelines
for new and transparent paths that we proudly call “Our
America”.
