Cuban Eastern Province of Guantanamo to Host Fifth
National Changüí Festival
GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Apr 26 (acn) The eastern Cuban
province of Guantanamo will host the Fifth National
Changüí Festival “Elio Reve Matos” on June 23-27, as
announced by musicologist and researcher Jose Cuenca, a
coordinator of the event.
|
Cuenca told ACN
that the biennial festival is dedicated on this occasion
to the 95th birthday anniversary of Chito Latamble, one
of the all-time greatest players of the Cuban tres (a
three-string guitar) and a staunch defender of this
autochthonous rhythm that originated early in the 19th
century in Guantanamo.
He mentioned that this event celebrates the 20th
anniversary of the band “Los morenos del Changui”, and
pays tribute to late researcher, musician and cultural
promoter Santiago Moreaux, the creator of the
socio-cultural project La Cumbancha that groups Changüí
bands from the territory.
The House of Changüí, the House of Trova, and the
Association of Son, are the main venues of the Festival,
which includes the traditional Contest of Interpretation
and Creation, and competitions among players of tres,
bongos, and marimbas.
The Festival also includes theoretical events such
as the Rafael Inciarte Colloquium, in which experts will
talk about Changüí, Son, and about the work of musicians
in the province.
The celebrations will expand to the rural
municipalities of Yateras, El Salvador, and Manuel Tanes,
which are considered to be the cradles of Changüí.
During the closing ceremony of the event, local and
important national bands, like El Charangon ––directed
by the president of honor of the festival, Elito Reve––,
will perform the longest Changüí in the world.
Coincidently, June 23 marks the birthday
anniversaries of the legendary Chito Latamble and of
also late Elio Reve Matos, who took Changüí throughout
the world.
