His
sudden death changed the course of the commemoration for Cuban
Press Day in Matanzas; and instead of heading to the Bay of
Pigs, scene of the victory for the Cuban people half a century
ago, the pilgrimage headed towards the local cemetery, to pay
homage to the memory of Herácleo, name derived from one of the
fathers of western philosophy, with honor.
Colleagues from the province of Matanzas gathered at the
Journalists House to remember their friend. Some carried
flowers, another an interview conducted with him last Thursday
just minutes before his death on the anniversary of the creation
of the daily Patria…
Ramon Pacheco, explored the archives and organized in record
time an exhibition of photos that reveals Herácleo with
journalism students, at the UPEC House, with Carilda Oliver
Labra, his great friend, congresses; a photo located in the
living room of his home: alongside Fidel Castro.
Political and government leaders from Matanzas accompanied the
journalists; Juan Marrero, Vice President of the Union of Cuban
Journalists, UPEC, called him “dearly beloved friend and
“soldier of the press”…
Flowers were placed over his tomb. A group of flowers with silk
ribbon showed a yellow card that read “always present”.
Antonio Malto Martorell spoke to those present about Herácleo
walking the streets of the city and ending up in the park at
night, talking to old comrades of the underground struggle.
“I fell in love” with that crazy old guy and he returned that
feeling”, confessed Molto who highlighted the figure of his
friend who was a man with ideas, tireless worker for the well
fair of all and took up the ideas of Jose Marti to work as a
journalist until his last minute. I characterized him as decent,
integral, specialized of life, because he knew what he had to
know…”
Cuban
Press Day in Matanzas was a day to reaffirm that Heracleo will
be in
each one of those that will begin the career of resistance with
the premise of telling the truth.
He was one of those people that never gave up in his ideals.
