Giron: Victory of the Cuban Youth

By Ángel Rodríguez Álvarez
On December of 1960, when the Battalion 113 of Cuba´s Revolutionary National Militias was formed, Arnel Hernandez del Rio was a young steel worker who was about to celebrate his 19th birthday.

After walking 62 kilometers, as many others in San Miguel del Padron (was part of the training) he became a member of the new group.

He recalls that it was an intense year with the struggle against counter revolutionary elements in the Escambray Mountains; then two days later on April 15th was the bombing of the military airports.

“On the 16th of April I participated in the burial of those that were killed in the bombing, where the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro made his historic speech proclaiming the socialist character of the Revolution and called to combat in defense of the Homeland.

“With that energy, we left for Bay of Pigs in the afternoon of the following day without knowing what we would find there”, but ready to face the invading forces, he said.

“On the 18th we woke up in the theater of operations, advancing through the Yaguaramos highway and we began to see the war scenario.

For example, he said, in San Blas where they had been recently dislodged, everything was destroyed. This encouraged us to continue to the positions
some 2 kilometers from there in a place called Helechal.

“I remember the combat spirit that reigned in the battalion, made up mainly by young workers that had been combatants for the first time, willing to give up their lives for the Revolution if necessary. There we know who the mercenaries were.

“On the 19th, we got involved in battles in an area from San Blas to Cayo Romana and from there we all went each morning to look for mercenaries that were spread in the region. Their combat moral was very low. Their attitude was not like the first days, they thought it would be easy.

“We were doing the same for several days until the Cienaga Swamp was back to normal and we returned to our homes. Many reincorporated themselves back to work and others like in my case went to the School of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

“Now, I am 69 years old, I still feel capable of repeating that same story, this time accompanied by my three sons and five grandchildren, all constructors of this new society, independent forever.”
