United States: Not as well as Some Pretend
by Néstor Núñez

US President Barack recently presented his national budget proposal for the 2011 fiscal year and as expected the Head of State attempted to make people believe in a promising future.

This is not an easy task. Obama got to the presidency inheriting the beehive created by the irresponsibility of George W. Bush and his sin is his incapacity of facing the situations.

The economic debacle began at the end of the Republican presidency and spread to other parts of the world and the remedies of the new administration was aimed at handing out money to those responsible to give them incentive to new and continuing irresponsibility.

The US is currently facing a strong fiscal deficit, colossal foreign debt and does not produce or sell enough to get out of the hole.

However, as denounced by Cuba a number of times, in the White House the game of influence and race towards hegemony continues and without a doubt the figures of the new budget is a clear example.

While there is talk on cutting spending that affect salaries, social programs and public properties, the stock exchange will continue its expenditures related to “security and defense”.

That way, the Pentagon and its national security entities will benefit with 728 billion dollars, including 118 billion for its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the so called “anti terrorist” operations in Pakistan.

These distributions imply an increase of over 7 billion dollars in military spending compared to 2010.

The US war invoice in the new fiscal period will represent 19.5 percent of the total budget presented by Obama and will increase to 3.73 trillion dollars.

On the other hand, the institutions tied to the control of the borders with a hike of some one billion dollars in its budgets are celebrating.

Meanwhile, the almost 600 million dollars destined to Mexico for the fight against organized crime including drugs and the transfer of weapons to and from the US were cut to 334 millions.

Of course, the Obama proposed budget will now have to face the majority controlled Republican Congress.

But as warned by Cuba when it comes to aggression there is a bipartisan consensus beyond those that currently occupy the White House.
