Great Love Stories in the History of Cuba
By Yudith López Ramos
The history of Cuba includes heroic actions and exceptional people that gave their lives for the country´s independence and sovereignty. But with so much passion for the Homeland, there was also space for love between couples, “that like a crater boils”, according to the words of Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti.

There are many examples of loyal lovers like Ignacio Agramonte and Amalia Simoni, extraordinary marriage despite the obstacles imposed on them by the Ten Year War.

On August 1st, 1866, “El Mayor” got married at the Nuestra Senora de la Soledad Church with his only girlfriend and created a home full of love.

History also includes a passion of love in 1928 of Italian Tina Modotti and Cuban revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, whose love turned into a legend.

She was a photographer and he was a student in exile in Mexico for political reasons, and both carried out a history mutilated by hatred and barbarity.

Although the Gerardo Machado dictatorship killers assassinated Mella shooting him from behind when walking with Tina, the lovers passed on to history books as passion and tenderness.

The same story goes for Maximo Gomez and Bernarda Toro; or Camilo Cienfuegos and Rosalba Alvarez.

In difficult times one and once again, love triumphs. Neither battles, injustices no hate can end such a feeling capable of creating wonders and turning anything into a miracle.
