A recent report revealed that
deforestation will continue at an alarming rate in a number of
nations and South America is among the regions that is most
affected.
Although over half of the forest areas in the world is
concentrated in Russia, Brazil, Canada, United States and China,
10 nations or areas do not have forests at all and another 54
covers less than 10 percent of its total surface.
Considered the most complete forest research carried out by FAO
up until now, entitled: “Evaluation of the 2010 World Forest
Resources”, the research covered 233 countries and territories.
The investigation recognized, however, that the lost of forests
in the world, mainly the conversion of tropical forests in
agricultural land decreased in the last 10 years.
The reforestation of trees recovered organization and increased
across the island starting in 1987 with the creation of what is
known as the Turquino-Manati Project, which includes the
participation of the population, state institutions and
organizations belonging to the National Forest Program.
Cuba began a slow reforestation since the early days of the
Revolution in 1959, and 14 percent of the surface was increased
to a 24.8 and is expected to reach 29.3 by 2019.
