We all have the right to live, says Cuban scientist
Havana, Aug 19 (AIN) Although the current situation is complicated
by environmental degradation and the possibilities of a nuclear war,
Cuban environmental advocates reaffirmed their conviction that there
are alternatives for the preservation of the human species and Earth
natural resources.

“It is a
must to try to achieve minimum equity for the entire global
population, because we all have the right to life,”said in
statements to ACN Gisela Alonso, president of the Environment Agency
(AMA), who runs a network of more than 3000 workers in specialized
centers and institutes.
She said that since the UN Conference on Environment, held in
Stockholm in 1972, “there has been no international action to
reverse this situation of accelerated degradation of natural
resources that are essential to human life.”
Alonso recalled that the International Union for Conservation of
Nature in 1969 promoted the sustainable development initiative in
another meeting in the Swedish capital.
She explained that her agency, along the Nuclear Energy and Advanced
Technologies Agency pursue the same goals but through different
paths: to contribute to the sustainable development of Cubans, on
the basis that, unlike many other countries, environmental care is
stipulated in the Constitution.
In Alonso´s opinion, the UN multilateral system, despite their
conditionings, offers options for cooperation to stop global
deforestation, to reduce large areas of pollution and preserving
ecosystems and to produce less toxic chemicals.
The expert also expressed confidence that science can help to use
bioactive materials and to defend the use of renewable energy
She
described climate change as the most acute envionmental problem of
this century, the intensification of floods, storms, extreme
meteorological events, ice melting, sea level and temperatures
rising.
For these reasons, “to bring about change in that regard, it is
important to stimulate a transformation of production and
consumption patterns, increased efficiency in resource use and
modify market mechanisms,” suggested the specialist.
It is inconceivable, she said, that despite the development achieved
by men and the accumulated knowledge, selfishness and lack of moral
and the ethical concepts are able to create the tensions that the
world now lives.
If there is willingness and awareness of such problems, there is
science to find solutions, she said and pondered the fact that if
there will be anything left after a nuclear confrontation as
Commander in Chief Fidel Castro has warned.
