The
call, promoted by the Peruvian Committee for Solidarity with The
Five, points out the urgent need for citizens, progressive
people and democratic sectors to redouble their solidarity with
their cause, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.
Likewise, the document highlights that the defense of the Cuban
heroes has found a new path for their case to be reopened and
that a possibility of attention to the international demands for
the release of these brave peace fighters is opening.
The text adds that a judicial procedure at US courts is pending,
which is urgent, also taking into consideration the delicate
state of health of Gerardo Hernandez, condemned to two life
imprisonments plus 15 years.
Gerardo, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero,
and Rene Gonzalez were arrested on September 12, 1998, and
subjected to a biased trial in Miami, in which harsh sentences
were imposed on them for monitoring the activities of violent
groups that organized terrorist acts against Cuba from Florida.
The personalities who joined the call asserted that once more a
call will be made to the US government, particularly to its
President Barack Obama, so the voice of the world demanding
attention to this fair request is heard.
Poets Arturo Corchera and Marco Martos, journalists German
Carnero and Alberto Vega, the president of the Peruvian
Committee for Solidarity with The Five, Gustavo Espinoza; writer
Oswaldo Reinoso and educator and former Education Minister
Gloria Helfer, among others, are some of the signatories.
Also signing the call are Edgardo de Habich, former Peruvian
ambassador to Havana; and left political leaders Alberto Moreno,
Aída García Naranjo, Roberto de la Cruz and Genaro Ledesma.
