Accompanied by commanders of the Revolution
Ramiro Valdes Menendez and Guillermo Garcia Frias and by local
veteran revolutionaries Ramon Pez Ferro and Gelasio Fernandez,
Fidel deposited flowers at the niches that contain the
combatants’ remains at the mausoleum built for them in Artemisa,
Habana province.
The leader of the Cuban Revolution recalled details of the
preparations for the attack on the two garrisons and praised the
significant contribution made on that occasion by young
revolutionaries from Artemisa.
Then he greeted the people at the site, who
honored him with applause and cheers.
Fidel also spoke with the First Secretary of the
Cuban Communist Party and the President of the local Government
in Artemisa. He questioned them about the harvest of guava,
mangoes and other local fruits and about the sugar-cane harvest.
Before leaving, he read a message to all Cuban revolutionary
combatants recalling the 1953 event, praising the five Cuban
antiterrorists unjustly imprisoned in the United States and
warning again of the dangers that threaten humanity.
