Lazo, who arrived on Thursday in Quito to
participate in the Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the
Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) in the Ecuadorean city of Otavalo,
visited the Chapel of Man, Guayasamin’s last and most important
work.
The Cuban high-ranking official and his delegation were received
by Guayasamin’s son Pablo and his family who accompanied Lazo in
his tour around the Chapel.
Lazo paid tribute to Guayasamin —known as the Painter of Ibero-America—
at the Tree of Life, under which his ashes are buried. He also
visited a monument dedicated to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti
at the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World City), which
separates the two hemispheres.
Early on Friday, the Cuban Vice President traveled to Otavalo
where —along with the presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez and
Bolivia, Evo Morales, as well as the heads of the other
participating delegations— will be received by Ecuadorean
President Rafael Correa.
The Cuban delegation to the summit also includes First Deputy
Foreign Minister Marcelino Medina; Deputy FM Rogelio Sierra; the
Cuban ambassador in Ecuador, Benigno Perez; and Orestes Perez,
an official of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
