Fernando Hernandez led the Cuban attack with 18
points while team captain Roberlandy Simon added 14 units to the
winners’ cause.
Cuba started with an advantage, but Poland quickly imposed their
game and stood in a comfortable lead to win the first set. Cuba
committed numerous errors, especially in reception. The
Caribbean squad reacted in the second and Poland’s repeated
errors allowed the easy victory for the host side. However, the
Europeans dominated the third set easily with Cuba making 12
errors. Poland went ahead in the fourth set before Cuba rallied
from seven points back and took the victory in front of
thousands of fans.
The Polish could not recover and Cuba got the victory in the
tie-break.
In the other game of Pool D, Germany picked up their first
victory away from home beating Argentina 3-0 (25-20, 25-20,
25-22) in Catamarca on Friday.
Grozer György topped the scores for the visitors with 20 points
while Pereyra and Garcia were the best player for the locals,
scoring eight points each.
In other results on Friday, in Pool A, Brazil beat South Korea
3-1; in Pool B, France swept China 3-0 and Serbia edged Italy
3-2; and in Pool C, Russia blanked Finland 3-0 and the United
States downed Egypt 3-1.
