Yoandry Leal led the island’s squad with 17 points while Wilfredo Leon contributed 11 to the Cuban cause. The German side was led by Gyorgy Grozer who scored 14 units.

“In general we are meeting our goal of getting better every game, and we did it primarily on one aspect that we had gone very wrong: blocking,” said Cuba coach Orlando Samuels after the match. “We must continue to improve in reception and in other aspects. I think that’s the basis of our victory,” he added.

In the other match of Pool D, Poland claimed their first victory in the tournament with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20) win over Argentina in San Juan, Argentina. Jarosz Jakub topped the scores for the visitors with 26 points while Lucas Ocampo scored 16 for the host side.
