Leal led the island’s squad with 17 points while Wilfredo Leon
contributed 11 to the Cuban cause. The German side was led by
Gyorgy Grozer who scored 14 units.
“In general
we are meeting our goal of getting better every game, and we did
it primarily on one aspect that we had gone very wrong:
blocking,” said Cuba coach Orlando Samuels after the match. “We
must continue to improve in reception and in other aspects. I
think that’s the basis of our victory,” he added.
In the
other match of Pool D, Poland claimed their first victory in the
tournament with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20) win over
Argentina in San Juan, Argentina. Jarosz Jakub topped the scores
for the visitors with 26 points while Lucas Ocampo scored 16 for
the host side.
In other
results, Serbia swept France 3-0, Russia beat Egypt 3-1, Italy
blanked China 3-0 and the United States defeated Finland 3-1.
