The 7th International Conference on the topic is
underway simultaneously in this central province of Cuba, Havana and
Santiago de Cuba. The meeting seeks to develop and perfection this
type of surgery in different joints of the human body.
Swiss expert Eduard Buess said in the meeting that
Cuba’s progress in the area has been demonstrated by the
independence and skills shown by surgeons during the surgical
procedures.
“When the project started in 2003, only isolated
cases underwent surgery and at present more than 200 patients
benefit from this procedure (minimal access surgery in joints) in
this province,” Buess added.
Meanwhile, US doctor Zenia Cortes said the conference
provides an opportunity to exchange knowledge and learn from the
Cuban doctors, who overcome the lack of advanced technology and are
able to innovate and have successful results.
On behalf of the American medical team, she presented
a donation of important surgery materials in a demonstration of the
solidarity that brings the two peoples together.
Ciego de Avila’s President of the Cuban Orthopedics
Society, Raunel Hernandez, announced during the event - which runs
through April 1st - that more than 10 local patients will be
operated by visiting experts and several keynote lectures will be
presented to increase the scientific level of participants.
This type of surgery, used across the country free of
charge, avoids post-surgery complications, speeds up recovery and
reduces the cost of prolonged stay in the hospital and the
consumption of antibiotics.
