Granma newspaper reports that the study began at the Institute of Immunology and Hematology (IHI) of the Public Health Ministry and, after its application in 21 patients, results look promising.

The procedure consists of obtaining stem cells from the patient’s bone marrow, which are later administered trough a percutaneous injection in the joint cavity of the knee.

Stem cells are capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation.

Porfirio Hernandez Ramirez, coordinator of the National Group of Re-Generative Medicinel, said that specialists from the IHI are working in this project along with experts from the Enrique Cabrera General Hospital and the Institute of Sports Medicine.

Since 2008, Cuba has been implementing, with promising results, re-generative medicine in the areas of orthopedics and traumatology, mainly in the treatment of bone cysts, pseudo-degenerative arthritis, complex hip fractures and degeneration of inter-vertebral discs.

Juventud Rebelde newspaper reported that the use of this technique is extending across the country, including the Arnaldo Milian Castro hospital in Santa Clara, central province of Villa Clara.
