In his keynote speech to the 12 Central American and
the Caribbean Congress on Labor and Social Security, Hubbard said
that the workers rights must be defended as a whole, since their
economic rights can not be set apart from their political, social
and cultural ones.
He added that, in his country, the labor and community organizations
connected through social movements can contribute to the legal
protection to the general claims made by the society less favored
sectors.
Though, the Taylor Act, which passed on 1967, that in theory grants
workers in the State of New York the right to organize themselves
and to elect their union leaders, forbids government employees to
strike, he said.
Under that law, those who go on strike get two unpaid days for each
day they don’t show to work, he explained.
The 12 Central American and the Caribbean Congress on Labor and
Social Security is attended by professionals from 15 countries and
will run till this Thursday at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, in this
capital city.
