During his
weekly report to the nation, the Ecuadorean leader referred to the
situation of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero,
Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez – internationally known as the
Cuban Five – who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States for
fighting terrorism.
Correa said that “they are not even allowed to see their relatives”
in spite of being in prison for several years already.
Meanwhile, in Geneva, Rene’s wife, Olga Salanueva, spoke before the
UN Human Rights Council about the situation of the Cuban
antiterrorists.
During an interactive discussion with the working groups on
Arbitrary Detention and on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances,
Salanueva spoke of her case and that of Adriana Perez, Gerardo’s
wife, who have been repeatedly denied visas by the US Government to
visit their husbands in prison.
The Cuban Five were tried and given harsh and unjust sentences after
a biased trial in Miami where they were arrested for monitoring
anti-Cuba extreme right groups that were planning and carrying
terrorist actions against the Caribbean nation.
