“This is
the first time that a Salvadoran FM visits Cuba since both nations
established diplomatic relations in 1902,” Martinez Bonilla recalled
after placing a floral wreath before the monument dedicated to Cuban
National Hero Jose Marti at the Revolution Square in Havana.
The
distinguished visitor, accompanied by Cuban Deputy FM Marcos
Rodriguez Costa, toured the Jose Marti Memorial where he learned
details of Martí’s life and work.
Speaking with reporters there, he announced that during his stay in
the Caribbean nation he will inaugurate the Salvadoran embassy in
Havana and will sign a bilateral framework agreement.
“We are
looking forward to signing these agreement and others in the fields
of education, health, science and technology,” he stressed and added
that the current integration process in Latin America and the
Caribbean is necessary and transcendental.
Martinez Bonilla and his accompanying delegation will visit the
Havana-based Latin American School of Medicine. He will also hold
official talks with his Cuban counterpart.
Cuba and
El Salvador established diplomatic relations on November 11, 1902,
and they were interrupted by El Salvador in March 1961. Then, after
the electoral victory of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation
front, President Mauricio Funes decided to resume bilateral
diplomatic relations on June 1, 2008.
