Journalism students and professionals on the island,
in order to give continuity to the recent expression of solidarity
with The Five of three Argentinean youngsters who climbed the
highest South American peak in January to demand the immediate
release from prison of these patriots, organized the project “From
the Aconcagua to the Turquino Peak”, with the same purpose.
The journey includes a tour of the area of military operations of
Commander Ernesto (Che) Guevara at the Sierra Maestra Mountains
during the 1956-1958 liberation war, and will end at the Turquino
Peak, the highest point of Cuban geography, located at some 1,974
meters above sea level.
Organizers said that this action in favor of the cause of Gerardo
Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and
Fernando Gonzalez, joins the international clamor for their
immediate release from prison.
The Five, in US jails since 1998, were unjustly condemned to long
sentences for monitoring the activities of counterrevolutionary
factions of Cuban origin in US territory.
For five decades, these terrorist groups have organized acts of
sabotage and attacks against the Cuban people, which have resulted
in thousands of deaths and people being injured, and considerable
damage to the island’s economy.
The aim of the caravan is to get to the top of the Turquino Peak on
Sunday, March 14, coinciding with Cuban Press Day.
