Cuba: An Example of Participatory Democracy
GUANTANAMO, Cuba, March 9 (acn) “The electoral process that is currently underway in Cuba is an example of a true participatory democracy in which the people directly elect their government representatives,” Ana Maria Mari Machado, President of the National Electoral Commission, told ACN today.

During a working visit to the easternmost province of Guantanamo, the electoral official described this territory as an impregnable bastion of the Revolution as it has been showed with a 94% participation of voters in meetings to elect candidates for delegates to the Municipal Assemblies.

Mari Machado noted that this ample participation nationwide is an expression of the Cuban people’s support of their Revolution.

She explained that the people’s motivations to participate in the process are not related to party interests because candidates are selected for their merits and abilities.

The national partial elections to elect delegates to the Municipal Assemblies will take place on April 25th with the second round scheduled for a week later.
