Lazo told Prensa Latina news agency that a
multidisciplinary group has been discussing for several days the
most pressing needs of the Haitian people and the country’s actual
possibilities to implement a new public health system in the future.
The Cuban vice president explained that the project consists of
setting up a primary care system that can actually guarantee health
services to the people with the support of ALBA based on the Cuban
experience in Haiti that started in 1998 when hurricane George hit
that country.
“This means that ALBA will undertake the design and implementation
of the health system,” Lazo confirmed in a meeting with a group of
Cuban health specialists currently working in Haiti.
Likewise, Lazo said any nation willing to help could join them in
the project. “It doesn’t matter what country it is, what we need is
to put together a program, build hospitals and build policlinics,"
he said.
According to a report on the front page of Granma newspaper, Lazo
told Haitian President Rene Preval that ALBA could contribute to
achieving a solid health system in all of its levels that guarantees
the health of the Haitian people.
