Diaz Canel pointed out that the environment
surrounding higher education centers is more complex everyday and
that universities have the duty to educate young women and men as
responsible citizens committed to the well-being of their societies.
The Cuban official talked about the universities’ leading role in
facing today’s colossal challenges of mankind, and he criticized the
position of developed countries specifically in the latest summit on
climate change held in the Danish city of Copenhagen. “Mankind
continues to be the victim of the greed, irresponsibility and
mistakes of only a few very powerful people,” he said.
Diaz Canel referred to measures taken recently in the island to
improve the educational system such as the increase of teaching
hours for History and Civic Education and the generalization of
university entrance examination.
He said Cuba defends a scientific, technological, humanist and
innovating university model that is committed to its people and
historical time and, at the same time, defends international
solidarity values.
University 2010 wraps up on Friday, February 12. Of more than 2,500
participants in the event, Venezuela brought the largest foreign
delegation with 309 members, while Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Brazil,
China, Russia and Italy have a significant number of representatives
as well.
