Speaking
at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Cuban Permanent
Representative before this international body, Rodolfo Reyes, said
that the United Nations should play the main role in the
coordination of all solidarity efforts, Prensa Latina news agency
reports.
Reyes also referred to Havana’s historic cooperation with Haiti in
the health sector, which allowed the Cuban personnel to be in the
front line immediately after a devastating earthquake hit
Port-au-Prince on January 12.
The Cuban diplomat added that, since December 1998, this
collaboration has included the participation of 6,094 Cuban workers.
He added that when the earthquake hit the Haitian capital, there
were nearly Cuban 400 doctors and other health specialists working
in 127 out of Haiti’s 137 municipalities.
“Today, there are more than 500 Cuban health professionals there and
also 249 young Haitians who hold medical scholarships in Cuba,”
Reyes noted.
