The
publication based its report on a recent information issued by
UNICEF, which affirms that the Caribbean island is the only Latin
American country that has managed to eradicate severe malnutrition.
Likewise, it makes reference to the statements made by the
representative of that UN organization in Havana, Jose Juan Ortiz,
in which he called the rest of the nations in the world to learn
from Cuba at the time of assuring the protection of children’s
rights.
The columnist attributes the guarantee of basic food for the
population to the efforts made by the Cuban government, and
underlines that the island’s advances in the fields of health care
and nutrition would have been greater if the hard economic,
financial and commercial blockade of the island didn’t exist.
For the pride of Cuba and its socialist system, -continues the
weekly- the Food and Agriculture Organization also acknowledged the
island as the Latin American country with the largest amount of
advances in the struggle against malnutrition.
People’s Democracy underlines that despite having a smaller per
capita Gross Domestic Product, as compared to rich nations, the
Caribbean island is ahead of many of them in terms of several
economic, social and environmental indicators, according to a report
published by the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s web site.
