The
program of solidarity emerged at the extraordinary meeting of the
Political Council of the ALBA-TCP (Trade Treaty of the Peoples) to
analyze the situation of that Caribbean nation, devastated on
January 12 by a powerful earthquake, which killed over 150,000
people.
The mechanism is part of a group of measures reflected in the
Declaration read by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, which
also includes the approval of a Humanitarian Fund for Haiti.
The health sector is a maximum priority of the program, for which
all aspects of logistics, infrastructure, transportation, technical
support and supplies have been guaranteed, the Prensa Latina news
agency reports.
Likewise, the ALBA-TCP approved a plan to take care of children,
specifically in the
education and food sectors, and expressed concern for what it
described as an excessive presence of military troops, in clear
reference to those from the United States.
For the Alliance, made up by Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba,
Dominica, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the
Grenadines and Venezuela, any help to Haiti must be given by
respecting its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Rotondaro told Prensa Latina that
the regional bloc will work on the recovery of hospitals and will
speed up the finishing or construction of Comprehensive Diagnostic
Centers, until arriving to the 10 centers planned.
Rodriguez pointed out that there are currently 766 Cuban specialists
in Haiti, 466 of which are working in Port-au-Prince.
