The Cuban squad is led by Yumari
Gonzalez, world champion in women’s scratch in 2007 and 2009,
and Lisandra Guerra, the 2008 world gold medalist in women’s 500
meters. The team is completed by Dalila Rodríguez, Yudelmis
Domínguez, Arianna Herrera and sprinter Alejandro Mainat.
Hector Marcos, with the Cuban
Cycling Federation, told ACN that the delegation that also
includes trainers Hector Ruiz and Leonel Alvarez will arrive in
Colombia late at night on Wednesday, only a few hours before the
beginning of the competition, which represents another challenge
for the Cuban cyclists.
In the opening day of the contest
on Thursday, Yumari and Dalila compete in women’s scratch,
Lisandra will do it in the women’s sprint event, and Mainant
will participate in men’s keirin.
Except for Yumari, who took the
silver medal in the women’s point race event of the first phase
of the World Cup in Manchester, England, this will be the first
contest of this type for the island’s cyclists this year.
Representatives from 22 countries
have confirmed their presence in Cali where, in 2008, Cuba took
a title, three silver and two bonze medals last year.
