In the solemn ceremony, Raul was accompanied by Commander of the
Revolution Ramiro Valdes Menendez and by Osmany Cienfuegos
Gorriaran, brother of Commander Camilo Cienfuegos – also known
as the Hero of Yaguajay.
The mausoleum was built in the same place where revolutionary
rebel troops seized the army barracks of Batista’s tyranny in
December 1958. The ceremony was carried out with military honors
as it included the inhumation of 44 members of the guerrilla
front who died in combat during the independence struggle or
after the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.
Also present in the ceremony was First Vice President Jose Ramon
Machado Ventura as well as members of the Politburo of Cuba’s
Communist Party, top officials of the Revolutionary Armed Forces
and the Interior Ministry, a group of combatants of the Northern
Front and local people.
The inhumation ceremony was led by floral wreaths from the
leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, from President
Raul Castro, and from the People of Cuba.
After placing a flower before the niche dedicated
to Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, Raul and other leaders of the
Revolution spoke with relatives of the revolutionary guerrillas.
