Cuba and Cyprus Strengthen Socio-Economic TiesCuba and Cyprus Strengthen Socio-Economic Ties

HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 29 (acn) Cuba and Cyprus strengthened on Tuesday their economic ties with the signing of eight cooperation accords and memorandums of understanding in the fields of agriculture, energy, culture, tourism, science and sports.

The signing ceremony at the Hotel Nacional in Havana was presided over by visiting Cypriot president Demitris Christofias and by the Cuban VP of the Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas. Also present were the members of Christofias’s accompanying delegation and several Cuban ministers.

One of the agreements, an accord for technical, industrial and economic cooperation, aims at developing mutually beneficial relations in several areas and it also provides the creation of a Joint Intergovernmental Commission.

Cuba and Cyprus Strengthen Socio-Economic TiesIn the energy sector, Cuba and Cyprus agreed to cooperate in the field of technologies, renewable sources of energy, petroleum and gas.

The legal instruments were signed, on the Cypriot side, by Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou and by the Minister of Trade, Industries and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides.

Meanwhile, on the Cuban side, the signatories were Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmierca; Agriculture Minister Ulises Rosales; Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero; the Minister of the Basic Industry, Yadira Garcia; Culture Minister Abel Prieto; the Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment, Jose M. Miyar Barrueco; the president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, Jose Ramon Fernandez; and the head of the Cuban Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, Christian Jimenez.
