In this regard, he said that his country’s position is very clear: the blockade must be lifted.

The Cuban people have suffered a lot due to the blockade and, therefore, it should disappear, added the head of state in a conversation with Prensa Latina news agency during a break of the UN General Assembly meeting.

Colom expressed his satisfaction for the return to Honduras of Jose Manuel Zelaya, the constitutional president of Francisco de Morazán’s homeland, because a change of head of state by way of rifles can’t be allowed.

The Guatemalan president underlined the importance of Zelaya’s return to Tegucigalpa as an action to advance toward a democratic solution to the crisis that nation is going through.

Guatemala supports the Honduran people in whatever necessary, because it’s the Honduran people the one that has to decide, he emphasized.

In this regard, he highlighted the efforts made by Latin America and the United Nations, the Group of Rio, the Caribbean Community, and the Organization of American States to achieve the restoration of democracy in Honduras.

Later, Colom made reference to the critical situation Guatemala is facing and pointed out that it’s a structural problem caused by 50 years of neglect in the fields of health, education and economic opportunities.

He explained that the people became poor and mentioned the existence of high indexes of extreme poverty and chronic malnutrition.
