The US Sets Out
Ambiguous Stance on Honduran Crisis
HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 7 (acn)
The US State Department expressed its support of toppled Honduran
president Jose Manuel Zelaya in the crisis the Central American
country is living, and clarified that no individual or institution
in particular in supported.
|
On a letter addressed to Senator Richard Lugar,
the US State Department’s Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of
Legislative Affairs, Richard Verma, pointed out that the United
States is not studying economic sanctions against the coup
perpetrators headed by Roberto Micheletti, the Granma newspaper
reports on Friday.
On one of its paragraphs, the letters reads: "our policy and
strategy of commitment is not based on the support of any
politician or individual in particular", and adds that "more
than that, it’s based on the search for a solution that serves
the Honduran people and its democratic aspirations in the best
way possible".
In this regard, Verma pointed out that "all states should look
for a way to facilitate a solution without calling to violence,
respecting the principle of non-intervention".
Although the administration of Barack Obama has condemned the
overthrowing of Zelaya, the latter considers this response as
warm. The toppled head of state has repeatedly demanded a
frontal opposition on the part of Washington against the coup
perpetrators, which would spur other countries to greater
efforts.
