MERCOSUR Summit Concludes with Condemnation to Honduras Coup
HAVANA, Cuba, Jul
24 (acn) The 37th Summit of the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR)
concluded on Friday in Asuncion, Paraguay, with a strong
condemnation to the coup perpetrated against Honduran legitimate
President Jose Manuel Zelaya.

Also, it demanded that constitutional order is
restored in this Central American nation.
In his opening speech, Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo,
categorically condemned the coup against Zelaya’s Government and
said that “Honduras is a bleeding wound in regional democracy”.
The Paraguayan President added that “as the bloc’s pro-tempore
presidency, we have strongly declared ourselves in defense of
Zelaya’s constitutional term of office since the very first day of
the coup” Telesur television network reports.
For his part, Bolivian President Evo Morales insisted that countries
in the region should bear in mind the origin of the military coup.
“What is the origin of the coup d´état in Honduras? From our point
of view is the US military intervention” by way of its military base
(Soto Cano) in that Central American country” pointed out Morales.
“I feel that (the US President, Barack) Obama is not involved, but
there is a structure of the US empire” in Honduras, said the
president.
The Friday meeting was attended by presidents
Cristina Fernández (Argentina), Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil),
Tabaré Vázquez (Uruguay), Michelle Bachelet (Chile) and Evo Morales
(Bolivia). Also present were representatives from Ecuador,
Venezuela, Peru and Colombia.
