International Computer Sciences Convention Inaugurated in Havana

HAVANA , Cuba, Feb 10 (acn) "'Informatica 2009' is a reality," said Cuban Deputy Minister of Computer Sciences and Communications Jorge Luis Perdomo during the inauguration of this international computer sciences convention that began on Monday in Havana, under the slogan of Development and Sovereignty.

In his opening speech, Perdomo thanked numerous regional and international organizations, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, for their cooperation.

For his part, ITU General Secretary Hamadoun Toure advocated closer ties between Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) with the low-income sectors and said that ICTs have contributed to the struggle against diseases such as AIDS in many countries.

"Technology allows us to grow and to reduce costs," said Socorro Hernandez, the Venezuelan Minister of Computer Sciences and Telecommunication.

The opening ceremony of the event was attended by the president of the Cuban National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon, and by Jose Ramon Fernandez, Vice President of the Council of Ministers, among other government officials, leaders and personalities.
