Raul was received by Vladimir Zabarovski, director of
the memorial complex, where he visited the Room of Glory, where he
laid the tribute wreath to those millions of soldiers who died
during the Great Patriotic War, which began June 1941 and ended May
1945, when the Nazis surrendered.
The Cuban President also paid tribute to the nearly 27 million
soviet people killed in the war as he held a minute’s silence at the
Memory and Wailing hall of the museum.
There are no words to truly express the gigantic sacrifice made by
those peoples, who made up the Soviet Union, particularly the
Russian people, Raul wrote on the guest’s book.
“Eternal glory to those who contributed the most to the great
victory of humankind during World War II, the Soviets “Great
Patriotic War”, reads the dedication written by the Cuban
president.
Raul praised the role of the memorial complex in keeping alive the
memory of those fallen for current and future generations, and he
added that “Forgetting those who sacrificed their lives for their
homeland is a crime”.
The Caribbean leader toured the Central Museum, whose exhibit ground
cover some 14,500 square meters, and includes a photo gallery
dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution by Nikolai
Chiguir, the first TASS news agency correspondent in Cuba.
Raul also donated a small replica of Yacht “Granma” to the Museum,
which represents the boat that brought the 82-men expedition to
Cuba, which led by Fidel Castro unleashed the Cuban liberation war
that triumphed in 1959.
The Cuban President arrived in Russia on Wednesday for an oficial
visit at the invitation of Russia's Head of State Dmitri Medvedev.
Both leaders are scheduled to hold talks on Friday at the Kremlin.
They will also attend the signing of several agreements on diverse
bilateral cooperation issues.
